Dr. Denise Kohn is a specialist in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American literature and teaches a variety of literature and writing courses. She regularly teaches courses in antebellum American literature and culture, American women writers and adolescent literature. As a scholar, she focuses on captivity and seduction narratives along with issues of gender, domesticity and women’s rights. She is invested in literary recovery work that seeks to republish and study lesser known texts to deepen our understanding of colonial and antebellum American culture. Kohn is editor of “Christine: or Woman’s Trials and Triumphs,” an 1856 radical suffrage novel by Laura Curtis Bullard, published as part of the Legacies of American Women Writers series at University of Nebraska Press. She is also co-editor of “Transatlantic Stowe: Harriet Beecher Stowe and European Culture” with University of Iowa Press. A proponent of the Reacting to the Past series, she incorporates role-playing games about Athenian democracy and the trial of Anne Hutchinson into different classes.
